Founded in the 10th century as a military settlement, Meknes rose to glory in the 17th century when Sultan Moulay Ismail made it his capital. Inspired by Versailles, he transformed Meknes into a grand imperial city, fortified with massive walls, monumental gates, palaces, and royal stables.
Today, Meknes is a UNESCO World Heritage site that blends history, architecture, and culture, offering a quieter but equally rich alternative to cities like Marrakech and Fes.

Built in 1732, the Bab Mansour Gate is one of the most spectacular gates in Morocco. Decorated with zellige tilework, marble columns, and intricate carvings, it reflects the grandeur of Moulay Ismail’s imperial vision.
Unlike most Moroccan shrines, the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail is open to non-Muslim visitors. Its richly decorated interior, featuring carved stucco, woodwork, and mosaics, honors one of Morocco’s most powerful sultans, who ruled for over 50 years.
This massive complex once housed over 12,000 horses. It also included advanced grain storage and a natural cooling system, showing the sophistication of 17th-century Moroccan architecture and engineering.
Often compared to Marrakech’s Jemaa El-Fna, Place El-Hedim is the main square of Meknes. Lined with cafés, markets, and traditional shops, it comes alive in the evening with street performers and local life.
Beyond its monuments, Meknes offers travelers:
Guided tours of the Imperial City and Medina
Visits to local souks for handicrafts and Moroccan spices
A base for excursions to Volubilis (Roman ruins) and Moulay Idriss Zerhoun
Tasting Meknes’s wines and regional Moroccan cuisine
As one of Morocco’s four imperial cities, Meknes is an essential stop for travelers interested in history, architecture, and Moroccan culture. Whether as a day trip from Fes or part of a longer Morocco tour, the city offers a unique blend of royal heritage and authentic Moroccan charm.
